Gestures and body movements are unconscious forms of expressions and therefore they h
ave a language of their own. We are unaware of our gestures and body movements 99 % of the time, but other people can notice our gestures and movements if they pay attention and may know what they mean.

Note that body language applies not only to the interviewer but also to the interviewee. Also note that these gestures may happen throughout the conversation and they change as the conversation progresses.

The objective of paying attention to nonverbal communication is to help you change the direction of the conversation. If the person is showing negative gestures, then you need to change the subject by asking a new question or talking about something else.

So, during a job interview, you can watch for the following gestures:

Crossed arms it means that the person is in a defensive and reserved mood.

Crossed arms and legs it means that the person feels very reserved and suspicious.

Open arms and hands it means that the person is open and receptive.

Standing before you with his hands inside the pockets it means he is not sure or feels suspicious.

Standing before you with his hands on his hips it means he is receptive and ready to help you out.

Sitting in a chair shaking one of his legs it means he feels nervous and uncomfortable.

His eyes are downcast and face turned away it means he is not interested in what you are saying.

The palm of the hand holding or stroking his chin it means he is in an evaluating position and being critical.

Leaning back in his chair with both hands clasped behind his head it means he is in an analytical mood, but it is also a gesture of superiority.

Rubbing or touching his nose when answering a question it means he is not telling the complete truth.

Maintaining good eye contact and he smiles in a relaxed and happy way it means he is definitely receptive to you.

Are you superstitious? No, of course not. Do you believe in magic (魔法), and luck charms (护身符), and elves or gremlins (小精灵) ? Certainly not, but if I should greet you with the usual How's business?" You'll answer "Oh, just so-so" although your business is profiting greatly. When you are successful in some venture you might say you were just lucky. And yet, you know it was probably due to your a bility and hard work. Why? Sometimes you knock on wood because wood was once a tree and there is a primitive belief that protective gods inhabit trees and knocking on wood attracts their attention so they may be credited with your successes.

If I should sneeze, only the strongest of you could refrain(克制而不) from saying "God bless you". Why bless this unsanitary (不讲究卫生的) habit? Our ancestors believed that a sneeze opened the body to invasion by devils, and invoking (召唤) the name of God made the devils get out in a hurry. You may not realize it, but you express this same "devil invasion" when you say, "Whatever can have gotten into that child?" or "I wonder what possessed me to do that?"

Although they may no longer be believed, evidences of superstitions that have had their origins in the primitive fear of the unknown still exist in modern language and gestures.

The author ______.

A.believe that most people are superstitious

B.believe that very few people are superstitious

C.believes that there are still some evidences of superstitions in what we say and what we do

Many years ago, children wore clothes that were the same as the clothes worn by adults, ex
cept that

they were smaller. People believed that children were just “small adults”, and expected them to dress and act like adults.

But now people know much more about children. In both body and mind, children are different from adults because they are at a different stage of development. As far as the body is concerned, it is obvious. A baby of six months can sit up, but can not run, and so on. But the development of the mind is not so obvious. A small child, for example, does not understand the difference between the present and the fu ture. So if the child asks for an apple and the parent says,“ No, not now, you can have one after lunch." The child often cries. Some mothers think the child is being difficult, but perhaps he is just being differ ent; he does not understand the idea of the future, and for him ”not now means “never”. So naturally, the child cries.

People used to believe that ______.

A.children should wear adults'

B.children were the same as adults, except that they were smaller

C.children acted like adults

D.children were adults in small clothes

Learning a foreign language is not a matter of reading some grammar rules and learning
some vocabulary words — although those are important activities not to be ignored.Acquiring (学到) a language is learning a skill, not a body of information. It’s as much like learning to swim or ride a bike as it is like learning about the Second World War.That is, you must not only understand the ideas and have information at hand, but also make your body accustomed to using that information in physical activity: In this case, the physical activity is speaking, listening, writing and reading.

You need, then, not only to learn and understand, but also to practice!

Here are a few suggestions on effective practice/study techniques.

1.Make your mouth or hand do what your mind is learning.Study out loud.Do go to the lab and work on the tapes.Study with a friend, and, thus, participate in speaking and listening.Try to write sentences or a short paragraph using the skills you have practiced with your own lips.

2.Study day-by-day.You cannot get by in a foreign language course by cramming (临时抱佛脚) at the last minute. You may be able to “learn” vocabulary items that way, but you cannot teach your mouth to use them in sentences.

3.Sometimes go back and review “old”topics and vocabulary.Language learning is cumulative (累积的).You learn new skills on the basis of old ones. The more you “recycle”familiar information and skills, the better you will be able to take in new ones.

4.Don’t be afraid to make mistakes.Self-consciousness (害羞) can be a strong barrier to learning a language.Perhaps part of the reason small children readily learn languages is that they are not afraid of making mistakes.

41.The first paragraph of the passage has been written to lay stress on the fact that______.

A.memorizing vocabulary words is necessary in language learning

B.learning to swim is quite similar to learning about the Second World War

C.understanding the ideas is more important than anything else

D.language learning is a process of acquiring different language skills

42.One of the major benefits of studying with a friend is that ________ .

A.it makes one talk in a particular language

B.it builds the friendship between two friends

C.friends can share tapes or other learning materials

D.one studies better in with a friend

43.Cramming is no good while learning a language because _________.

A.it is of little use to study without a clear purpose

B.nothing can be learned through cramming

C.anything learned that way can hardly be put into use

D.one may not find enough time to use at the last minute

44.The purpose of reviewing old topics is __________.

A.to build up a good basis for new skills

B.to enjoy the good ideas contained in them

C.to throw away the old, useless information

D.to avoid making mistakes in the future

45.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

A.Why Children Are Able to Learn a Language Better than Grown-ups

B.A Few Suggestions on Studying a Foreign Language

C.Why Learning a Foreign Language Is More Difficult than Anything Else

D.An Introduction to Language Teaching and Learning

第10题
Some people seem to have a knack for learning languages. They can pick up new vocabulary,
master rules of grammar, and learn to write in the new language more quickly than others. They do not seem to be any more intelligent than others, so what makes languages so much easier for them to learn? Perhaps if we take a close look at these successful language learners we may discover a few of the techniques that make language learning easier for them.

First of all, successful language learners are independent learners. They do not depend on the book or the teacher. They discover their own way to learn the language. Instead of waiting for the teacher to explain, they try to find the patterns and the rules for themselves. They try to learn from their mistakes.

Successful language learning is active learning. Therefore, they do not wait for a chance to use the language. Instead they look for such a chance. They will try anything to communicate. They are not afraid to repeat what they hear and to say strange things. They are willing to make mistakes and try again. When communication is difficult, they can accept information that is inexact or incomplete. It is more important for them to learn to think in the language than to know the meaning of every word.

Finally, successful language learners are learners with a purpose. They want to learn the language because they are interested in the language and the people who speak it. It is necessary for them to learn language in order to communicate with these people and to learn from them. They find it easy to practise using the language regularly because they want to learn it.

The best learners of languages _____ .

A.are the most intelligent students in the class

B.are the best at memorizing long vocabulary lists

C.have the best language learning techniques

D.are the best at mastering rules of grammar
