"Mummy ! Mummy ! I saw some really big tadpoles (蝌蚪) in the pond (池塘). You've promised to catch some for us. "Phillip says, following me towards the kitchen. "Some of them have already got legs!" "Yes! We can catch them and watch them turn into frogs!" Geoffrey says suddenly. "Can we go? Right now?"The telephone has been ringing. I try to get the receiver, but it is too late. It has been cut off.

"Give me a minute to catch my breath. 'I beg. "Put the groceries away. Get some jars out. I'll go change."

We go to the wide pond which lies smooth and still, its surface dotted with pink (粉红色 ) and white lilies (睡莲). Phillip and Geoffrey, laughing and shouting, run to the water's edge. I feel the peace of the place broken by the children. I hope there are no tadpoles so we can leave quickly. There's dinner to cook.

It is quite some time before we have taken the first tadpole to the bank. "The children are wild with joy. Back in the pond we go, and we try hard to catch five more fat ones. We all agree that's enough. The sun has gone down. A frog goes to the opposite shore. It's well past dinner time, bath time and bedtime when we really leave. But none of us thinks of those things. Phillip and Geoffrey are in high spirits, and I am the same because I have done what I should.

Phillip and Geoffrey's voices must be ______.

A.sharp, nervous, tiresome

B.anxious, angry, inspiring

C.soft, sweet, pleasing

D.eager, excited, demanding

A: I've come about your offer for bristles.

B: We have the offer ready for you. Let me see... Here it is. 100 cases of Tsingtao Bristles, 57mm, at... pounds sterling per kilogram, CIF European Main Ports, for shipment in June, 2009. The offer is valid for three days.

A: Why, your price has soared. It's almost 25 % higher than last year's. It would be impossible for us to push any sales at such a price.

B: I'm a little surprised to hear you say that. You know very well that market for bristles has gone up a great deal in recent months. The price we offer compares favourably with quotations you can get elsewhere.

A: I'm afraid I can't agree with you there. I must point out that your price is higher than some of the quotations we have received from other sources.

B: But you must take the quality into consideration. Everyone in the trade knows that China's bristles are of superior quality to those from other countries.

A: I agree that yours are of better quality. But there's competition from synthetic products, too. You can't ignore that prices for synthetic bristles haven't changed much over the years.

B: There's practically no substitute for bristles for certain uses. That's why demand for natural bristles keeps rising in spite of cheaper synthetic ones. To be frank with you, if it were not for the long-standing relationship between us, we would hardly be willing to make you a firm offer at this price.

A: Well, we'll have a lot of difficulties in persuading our clients to buy at this price. But I'll have to try, I suppose.

A man once said how useless it was to put advertisements in the newspapers. "Last week," s
aid he, "my umbrella was stolen from a London Church. As it was a present, I spent twice its worth in advertising, but didn't get it back."

"How did you write your advertisement?" asked one of the listeners, a merchant.

"Here it is," said the man, taking out of his pocket a slip cut from a newspaper. The other man took it and read, "Lost from the City Church last Sunday evening, a black silk umbrella. The gentleman who finds it will receive ten shillings on leaving it at No. 10 Broad Street."

"Now," said the merchant, "I often advertise, and find that it pays me well. But the way in which an advertisement is expressed is of great importance. Let us try for your umbrella again, and if it fails, I'll buy you a new one." The merchant then took a slip of paper out of his pocket and wrote: "If the man who was seen to take an umbrella from the City Church last Sunday evening doesn't wish to get into trouble, he will return the umbrella to No. 10 Broad Street. He is well known." This appeared in the paper, and on the following morning, the man was astonished when he opened the front door. In the doorway lay at least twelve umbrellas of all sizes and colors that had been thrown in, and his own was among the number. Many of them had notes, fastened to them saying that they had been taken by mistake, and begging the loser not to say anything about the matter.

What is an advertisement?

A.A news item.

B.A public announcement in the press, on TV, etc.

C.One way to voice one's view.

D.Public opinions.

Counter-offer

Joe, the representative of the buyer, is at Mr.Liang's office, discussing the offer with Mr.Liang.

Joe: Mr.Li, Thank you for your prompt offer.I have studied your offer carefully and consulted our home office. After investigating and comparing, we found that your price is about 5 percent higher than those offered by European Suppliers.

Liang: I hope you also should consider the quality of the goods as well.I'm sure you know very well that our product is made of pure silk. This, of course, increases the cost but promises the superior quality.

Joe: I will agree with you about the importance of quality. But 5 percent is a big difference which we can't not accept because that will leave us little benefit in the intense competition on the world market.

Hang: We can give you a 2 percent discount if your quantity can be adjusted up to 10 000 pieces. And we have confidence that even your selective customers will be satisfied with the fashionable design and superb quality of our goods.

Joe: I am afraid 2 percent is not enough for us to open a new market for your products. We believe 4 percent at least will make your product more competitive.

Liang: I'm afraid we can't give 4 percent reduction by all means.Considering you are a new customer, a 3 percent reduction is really the best we can do.

Joe: Well, Mr.Li, does this price include seaworthy packing?

Liang: The outer packing is for container transportation. That is the usual practice.

Joe: How long will this offer be valid?

Liang: Within one week.

Joe: I'll try to persuade our head office to accept the price with 3 percent discount and inform you of the answer at an early date.

Hang: We will await your good reply.

Cindy Hess began her automotive career as a Design and Development Engineer with Chrysler,
in the fall of 1977. Today, she is Vice-President of Daimler Chrysler, and head of the Small Car Platform. Engineering Department which is directly responsible for the design and development of the Neon, Doge Viper, and all future small cars.

"Many different departments are involved, in bringing a product to market," said Hess, referring to the 2000 Neon. "A company looks into renewing a particular vehicle when its marketplace demand is good, and the profits increase our shareholder's value," explained Hess. "We look to our market research in determining which options we'll keep the same or delete, and which ones we want to add to improve our appeal."

Now that the Neon 2000 is on the market, her team will use survey and research results to determine which option packages work best for the consumer, and what improvements, if any, need to be made. And the best goes on.

Hess supervises 1 200 engineers while managing a successful life as wife and mother. Her secret, she said, is to "always try to give 150 percent in everything I do. The only way I can really balance my work and family is 'by cheating at both ends'. " "For example," Hess said, "I always take my boys to school on the first day of the year--so I come in a little late. A few times a year I leave work for a couple of hours to see my son in a play or to attend his swim meet."

Like most other successful women in the auto industry, Hess's day begins early and ends late. In her case, coaching her son's basketball game ends some of Hess's days. "Occasionally," she adds," I come in to work on the weekends to catch up on paperwork and mail and have also been known to be called to work while I am on vacation."

What is Cindy's chief responsibility now?

A.Renewing promising car models.

B.Supervising production.

C.Doing market research.

D.Developing small cars.
