I had just gone to bed after a very hard day when the phone rang. It was an eccentric(怪癖) farmer. I had never met him before although I had heard people talk about him. He sounded quite nervous and talked for a minute or so before I understood anything. Even then all I could make out was that someone called Milly had had a very bad accident. I didn't have the slightest idea who she was but obviously I had to go.

It was snowing heavily that day and I didn't know the way. I had been driving for at least an hour when I finally found his place. He was standing there, waiting for, me. "She meant more to me than anyone... even my own wife!" he said. I could see that he had been crying. I thought something terrible had taken place, a possible scandal(丑闻). I was even more shocked when he told me that he had put her in the barn(厩). "I wouldn't leave her out in the cold!" he said.

Milly had clearly been a secret lover of his. I was about to tell him he could not expect me to cover anything up when he opened the barn door. He lifted his candle and I saw a dark figure on the ground. "She was such a good cow! I wouldn't let anyone but a doctor touch her!" he said, and burst into tears again.

The underlined phrase "make out" in the first paragraph means______.

A.expect

B.see clearly

C.hear clearly

D.understand

Roger lived in the city of London, and his hair was always cut by the same old man. He alw
ays cut Roger's hair as Roger liked it, and while he was doing it, the two men talked about football.

One day, when Roger was sitting in his chair, and his hair was being cut as usual, the old man said to him, "Roger, I'm going to be seventy years old next month and I feel tired, so I'm going to sell my shop to a young man. He liked to cut hair for people."

Roger was sorry to hear that, because he enjoyed talking to the old man, and he was also worried that his hair would not be cut as well by the new young man as it had been for so many years by his old friend.

He went to the shop again the next month, and the new young man was there. He cut Roger's hair, but he did it badly.

The next month, Roger went into the shop again. The young man asked him how he would like his hair cut, and Roger answered, "Please cut it very short on the right side, but leave it as it is on the left. It must cover my ear. On top, cut all the hair away in the middle, but leave a piece at the front."

The young man was very surprised when he heard this, "But sir," he said, "I can't cut your hair like that!" "Why not?" Roger asked. "That's how you cut it last time."

Who always cut Roger's hair?

A.His new friend.

B.A young man.

C.An old woman.

D.His old friend.

I was eleven when we had to move out of the big old house in which I had spent my whole li
fe. Each time I thought of that, I felt very sad. When the final day came, I ran to a corner and sat alone, trying not to let others see my tears. Suddenly I felt a hand patting me on the shoulder. I looked up, and saw my grandpa. "It isn't easy, is it, my grandson?" he said in a very low voice, sitting down beside me. I nodded through my tears, without a word. We sat silently for a long time. Then he said, "Good-by is such a sad word that it seems too cold for us to use. We must try to avoid it."

Then we walked slowly in the garden, hand in hand, to have a last look at each rock, each tree, each flower. We sat for a while by the small pond which was a favorite place of my grandpa's. "What do you see here, Tommy?" asked the old man. I looked at the water, not knowing what to say, and then replied, "I see something soft and beautiful, Grandpa." He pulled me close to him and said, "It isn't the pond or the trees or the flowers that are beautiful. It is the special place in your heart that makes you feel so." After a while, he continued, "I built the pond, and planted the trees and the flowers a long time ago. I started to build this beautiful home the day my only son was born." He stopped. After a long silence, he murmured(低声说), "One day a terrible war came, and my son, like many other people's sons, went away to fight. Five months later, a telegram came, telling us that my son had passed away...' he couldn't finish his sentence. I saw tears trickle from his eyes. "That afternoon I picked some roses from this place and put them in front of son's portrait (肖像), and said goodbye to him. You know who he was, Tommy?"

"My father?" I asked in a whisper, hoping my grandpa would say no. But he said, "That's rights my dear. ' Ann in arm, we cried. Then the old man held me ups and said softly, "My dear Tom, we axe going to move, but don't say good-bye to our old house, never."

As my train wasn't due to leave for another hour, I had plenty of time to spare. After buy
ing some newspapers to read on the journey, I made my way to the luggage office to collect the heavy suitcase I had left there three days before. There were only a few people waiting, and I took out my wallet to find the receipt for my case. The receipt didn't seem to be where I had left it. I emptied the contents of the wallet, and railway-tickets, money, scraps of paper, and photographs fell out of it; but no matter how hard I searched, the receipt was nowhere to be found.

When my turn came, I explained the situation sorrowfully to the assistant. The man looked at me suspiciously as if to say that he had heard this type of story many times and asked me to describe the case. I told him that it was an old, brown-looking object, no different from the many cases I could see on the shelves. The assistant then gave me a form. and told me to make a list of the chief contents of the case. If they were correct, he said, I could take the case away. I tried to remember all the articles I had hurriedly packed and wrote them down as they came to me.

After I had done this, I went to look among the shelves. There were hundreds of cases there and for one dreadful moment, it occurred to me that if someone had picked the receipt up, he could have easily claimed the case already. This hadn't happened fortunately, for after a time I found the case lying on its side high up in a comer. After examining the articles inside, the assistant was soon satisfied that it was mine and told me I could take the case away. Again I took out my wallet: this time to pay. I pulled out ten-shilling note and the "lost" receipt slipped out with it. I couldn't help blushing and looked up at the assistant. He was nodding his head knowingly, as if to say that he had often seen this happen before too!

The writer had plenty of time to spare as his train ______. ()

A.was leaving later than scheduled

B.was not leaving for another hour

C.was not scheduled to leave

D.was delayed for some reason
