In the U S, people like waiting for a table than sitting with people they don't know. This

means a hostess may not seat a small group even if a large one is available. If you are sitting at a table with people you don't know, it is impolite to light up a cigarette without asking first if it will disturb them.

At American restaurants and coffee shops, you are usually served tap water before you order. You may find the bread and butter is free and if you order coffee, you may get a free refill (免费再加).

Most cities and towns have no rules about opening and business times for stores or restaurants, though they usually do make rules for bars. In large cities, especially, stores may be open 24 hours a day.

Servings (上的饭菜量) in restaurants are often large, too large for many people. If you can't finish your meal but would like to enjoy the food later, ask your waitress or waiter for a "doggie bag" (“狗食袋”,即打包袋儿). It may have a picture of a dog on it, but everybody knows you're taking the food for yourself,

Supper and dinner are both words for the evening meal. Some people have "Sunday dinner". This is an especially big noon meal.

Tips are not usually added to the cheek. They are not included in the price of the meal. A tip of about 15% is often expected and you should leave it on the table when you leave. In some restaurants, a check is brought on a plate and you put your money there. Then the waiter or waitress brings you your change.

Which statement is true?

A.American people like sitting with people they don't know.

B.Hostess always seat a small group at a large table.

C.American people never sit with people they don't know.

D.American people would not light a cigarette if the people who sit at the same table mind their smoking.

Many superstitious people are afraid of black cats. They believe that black cats have a st
range power. If a black cat crosses their path, they think they will have bad luck.

Black cats haven't always had such a bad reputation. Long ago, the Egyptians thought that black cats were holy animals. They even worshipped them. Pasht was an Egyptian goddess who had a woman's body and a cat's head. Because the Egyptians had so much respect for black cats, they often buried the </u>sacred</u> creatures with great ceremony. Mummies of cats have often been found in ancient cemetery ruins. To keep the cats company after they died, mice were sometimes buried beside them.

Feelings about black cats have always been strong. People have thought they were either very good or very bad. The people of Europe, in the Middle Ages, believed black cats were the evil friends of witches and the Devil. Witches were said to have the power to change themselves into black cats. People believed that you could not tell whether a black cat was just a cat, or whether it was a witch disguising herself as she plotted some evil scheme. The brain of a black cat was thought to be a main ingredient in witch's brew.

Unlike their ancestors of the Middle Ages, Englishmen today consider black cats to be good luck charms. Fishermen's wives often keep a black cat around so that their husbands will be protected when they are out at sea.

The Egyptian goddess Pasht had a______.

A.woman's head and a cat's body

B.woman's head and a lion's body

C.cat's head and a man's body

D.woman's body and a cat's head

第9题
The murder took place around ten o' clock p. m. on June 10. Thirty-two people watched Kitt
y being killed right beneath their windows. She was their neighbor. Yet, none of the 32 helped her. Not even one called the police. Was this inhuman cruelty? Was it lack of feeling for one' s fellow man?

"Not so," say scientists Dr. Darley and Dr. Fatane. They' ve found the reasons why people don' t act. According to them, a person has to go through two steps before he can help. First he has to notice there is an emergency.

Suppose you see u middle-aged man fall onto the ground. Is he having a heart attack, or some other physical trouble? Or is he simply about to sleep off a drunk? So it' s not always easy to tell if you are faced with a real emergency.

Second and more important, the person faced with an emergency must feel himself responsible. He must feel that he must help.

The researchers found that a lot depends on how many people are around. They asked college students to come in to be "tested". Some came alone, some with one or two others, and some in large groups. When they came in, either alone, in pairs, or in groups, a lady went into the next room. Soon the students heard a scream, the noise of something falling and a cry for help. All of this had been prerecorded on a tape-recorder.

Eight out of ten of the students taking the test alone acted to help. Of the students in pairs, only two out of ten helped. Of the students in groups, none helped,

In other words, in a group, Americans often fail to act. They feel that others will act. They, themselves, needn' t. They do not feel any direct responsibility.

Why didn't the thirty-two people act to help Kitty according to the passage?

A.Because they were afraid to be killed.

B.Because they were cruel in their hearts.

C.Because they thought others would help.

D.Because they didn't notice the emergency,
