Sioux names were a language unto themselves, laden with descriptive, allusive, or even mag
ical meaning. A Sioux baby was named soon after birth--usually by a medicine man or a paternal relative--and the entire village participated in the occasion. The infant might be named for an animal, for a physical phenomenon such as thunder that occurred on the day of the birth, or even for a brave deed that once had been performed by the giver of the name. A woman generally kept the name she received at birth, but a man often replace his original name with a new one that celebrated a personal act of valor, recalled an encounter with an unusual animal, or perhaps was inspired by a dream. However, a man who had a distinguishing characteristic was forever known by an apposite nickname, such as Big Hand. Because Sioux names almost always were based on something objective, they could easily be rendered as pictographs-frequently with a line connecting visual representations of the name and a human head to signify ownership. Below are some Sioux signatures.

Which of the following is the best title for this passage?

A.Sioux Signatures.

B.Unusual Sioux Names.

C.How the Sioux were Named.

D.Sioux Language and Customs.

Over the last twenty years, scholarly and popular writers have analyzed and celebrated the
worlds of leisure and entertainment in the burgeoning cities of mid-nineteenth-century America, greatly expanding the literature on these subjects. They have found an enthusiastic readership by offering glimpses of modes of leisure, performance, and charlatanism that passed from the scene in the early 20th century, indicating how lively they were and how comparatively impoverished our own entertainment choices have become in an era dominated by corporate electronic media.

Many scholars have been lured into a fascination with the extinct demimonde of dime museums, exhibition hails, saloons, and industrial exhibitions. During this period entertainment relied upon artful deception, comparable in importance to such contemporary forms of amusement as minstrelsy and melodrama. The cultural activities were forms of representational play in which spectators are caused to doubt their perceptions and judgment. Entertainments that tricked, or duped the paying public flourished in America's cities in the 19th century. What distinguished these cohorts of entertainers, was not their ability to perpetrate fraud but that they understood the dynamics of a new urban audience that enjoyed distinguishing the genuine from the fake and the authentic from the concocted. The willing audience for artful deceptions maintained a double consciousness in which it simultaneously marveled at the qualities of the object or action displayed while enjoying the act of appraising the quality, audacity, and performance of the deception.

By offering semiotic analyses of a range of Victorian performances, we learn there was more to these exhibitions than appeared at first viewing. The tricks and lures of these entertainers deserve a more than marginal position in American cultural history.

The author thinks current entertainment is relatively poor because

A.it doesn't have enough charlatanism.

B.it is controlled by corporate electronic media.

C.there is a lack of vigor in current entertainment.

D.people's tastes have changed for the worse.

The idea of a special day to honor mothers was first put forward in America in 1907. Two y
ears later a woman, Mrs. John Bruce Dodd, in the state of Washington proposed a similar day to honor the head of the family—the father. Her mother died when she was very young, and her father brought her up. She loved her father very much.

In response to Mrs. Dodd's idea that same year—1909, the state governor of Washington proclaimed (宣布) the third Sunday in June is Father's Day. The idea was officially approved by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge recommended national observance of the occasion " to establish more intimate (亲密的) relations between fathers and their children, and to impress upon fathers the full measure of their obligations. " The red or white rose is recognized as the official Father's Day flower.

Father's day took longer to establish on a national scale than Mother's Day, but as the idea gained popularity, tradesmen and manufacturers began to see the commercial possibilities. They encouraged sons and daughters to honor their fathers with small thank-you presents, such as a tie or a pair of socks, as well as by sending greeting cards.

During the Second World War, American servicemen stationed in Britain began to request Father's Day greeting cards to send home. This generated a response with British card publishers. Though at first the British public was slow to accept this rather artificial day, it's now well celebrated in Britain on the third Sunday in June in much the same way as in America.

Father's Day seems to be much less important an occasion than the Mother's Day. Not many of the children offer their fathers some presents. But the American fathers still think they are much better fated than the fathers of many other countries, who have not even a day for their sake in name only.

When did Father's Day officially begin to have national popularity?

A.1907.

B.1909.

C.1916

D.1924

On the fourth Thursday in November, Americans celebrate the feast of Thanksgiving. This fe
ast is a time when the family comes together for a meal and gives thanks to God for the blessings they have received. The first thanksgiving feast was celebrated by the early American settlers who started the feast to give thanks to God for their good harvest.

In America Thanksgiving is the family holiday. It is on that holiday that all the family members make a special effort to gather together. The feast is always held on Thursdays and most people have a four-day holiday from school and work. Thus they are able to travel a great distance to be with their family.

The Thanksgiving meal is traditionally turkey which is a large bird valued as food for the first time. The table is filled with fruits, walnuts and many types of vegetables. For the sweet dish the main choice is usually pumpkin pie. The meal is a time for the members of the family to talk to each other. There will be talking before the meal, during the meal and long after the meal.

On Thanksgiving morning there are in many cities sporting events and parades to mark the day. The family dinner is usually held in the afternoon around 4 p.m. The mother will prepare the meal and the father will carve the turkey. He will be seated at the head of the ta- ble. The meal will begin with a short prayer of Thanksgiving to God for the blessings the family received. The father will also thank the family for coming together on this day. Dur- ing the meal there is plenty of food for everyone present. The meal is a very joyful time. When the meal is finished, some will help with the dished and others will return to the living room to talk or watch television.

In many ways the feast of Thanksgiving is similar to the Chinese feast of Mid-Autumn Festival. It is the time for the family to gather together to give thanks and to share in meal.

Thanksgiving is said to be the family holiday in America because______.

A.each family has its own way of celebrating traditional holidays

B.people will try to get back to be with their family wherever they are

C.people celebrate this holiday only at home and abroad

D.it is a holiday for those who have a family

You' d think Pauline Hord would have served her time by now. After all, she recently celeb
rated her 90th birthday, and by the time she achieved that breathtaking milestone, she ' d already done a 10-year stretch in the Mississippi State Prison.

Ms Hord is a sweet-natured, gentle -talking, white-haired Southerner who never owed a debt to society—thus, she never had to pay one. So you have to wonder what a woman like this is doing in a place where most people are itching to get loose. Unlike the rest of the population, Ms Hord goes to prison freely and eagerly. And when she gets there, she persuades prisoners of every sort to sing little ditties about their ABCs and XYZs.

At age 80 , Ms Hord began teaching prisoners to read during a chance visit to the State Prison with a lawyer friend. "When I got there, I heard that a group of volunteer workers had been praying for a teacher. They asked me if I would come and I said I would be thrilled, " she said.

On a personal level, Ms Hord considers this rewarding work. If you get at the reason why these men went into crime, you will find that none of them succeeded in their early years of schooling. "They went to school at 5 believing they were going to learn to read. When they didn't learn in the first or second grade, they realized something was wrong. By 8, they were having problems. By 12 or 13, they were drinking or using drugs. And it's getting worse. I' m seeing younger and younger prisoners who know less and less. They can't read well enough to function in this society. " She says.

It is this situation that Ms Hord goes to prison week after week to correct. And when her most difficult students finally begin to read, she is sure that she, too, knows why the caged birds sing.

Ms Hord goes to prison eagerly to______.

A.sing songs for the prisoners

B.teach the prisoners to read

C.pray for the prisoners

D.make friends with the prisoners
