Why does Mann foresee stronger and more hurricanes in future Atlantic Ocean?
A.All other factors resulting in hurricanes were equal during the past 150 years or so.
B.A rising thermometer has pushed the number of hurricanes a year up to 15 in recent years.
C.Atlantic temperatures today have dropped to the lowest because La Nina events these years.
D.Atlantic temperatures today are even higher than temperatures in the Perfect Storm.
Recent research suggests that the warming trend (倾向) of the past hundred years or so may be coming to an end. During the past ten years, scientists tell us that the temperature of the world has dropped a little. This would have effects on wind and rain in the weather picture.
Scientists believe clouds may be an important factor (因素) in changing the amount of heat on the earth. Another possibility is that man's agriculture and industry ways may affect the natural weather.
The weather of the world seems to be getting ______.

But doctors say evidence also shows there is no reason for persons to become terrified by the disease. The AIDS virus is spread during sex with an infected partner, or by infected blood. But doctors say their studies show the disease is not spread through normal, close social activities.
A study by one research team was printed in the New England Journal of Medicine. The doctors studied one-hundred-one family members who lived with AIDS and lived in crowded conditions. The family members shared many personal goods with the patients. These included toothbrushes, drinking glasses, beds, towels and toilets.
Doctors said only one family member—a five-year-old girl—got the AIDS virus. They note, however, that the girl's mother had the disease. They believe the girl probably was born with the virus. No other family member in the study got the AIDS virus or showed any signs of the disease.
The head of the study, Gerald Friedland, said if the disease is not easily spread in crowded homes, it also will not spread easily in factories, offices, schools and other public places. (67) Doctor Friedland said the study also shows there is no reason to punish AIDS patients and to force them to live separately from other persons.
American health officials recently warned, however, that some health care workers should take special care. The report noted the AIDS virus is carried in blood and other body fluids. It said health care workers should put protective covers over their eyes and skin during medical operations, dental work, or other times when the patient may bleed.
(68)In the United States, most AIDS patients are homosexual people, people taking drugs, people who used infected needles, and persons who received infected blood. More recent studies show the AIDS virus also can be spread during heterosexual(异性的)relations. It can spread either from the man to the woman, or from the woman to the man.
Doctors say there is no reason for people to be frightened about AIDS because______.
A.it is not deadly
B.few people are infected with AIDS
C.the AIDS virus is not spread in everyday social activities
D.the AIDS virus is not spread during sex

The source of the sun' s inconstancy is magnetism. Professor William Livingston has developed new theories about its magnetic nature.
"We don' t yet know what causes sun spots, "he says, "but we now think they ' re areas of high level magnetism that come up from the sun' s interior. So strong is their magnetic pull that the highly ionized gas nearby is not able to transmit energy out. "As a result these areas send out less heat and light and thus appear from Earth to be almost dark irregular surface patches.
Sun spot activity generally fluctuates in steady, 11-year cycled. Scientists have long formed the o pinion that as the size and number of sun spots increased, the overall energy sent out by the sun would de crease. Indeed, recent studies confirmed it, revealing that during peak periods of sun spot activity, the Earth experiences a small drop that can be seen clearly in received solar energy.
Could such a small drop in energy have an effect here on earth? Perhaps some scientists think the world temperature could fall by' as much as 0.2 during periods of high solar magnetism.., enough to cause significant fluctuations in weather patterns.
According to the passage, it is believed that the sun ______ .
A.moves in a quick but steady way year after year
B.sends out less and less heat and light with each passing year
C.radiates the same amount of light every year
D.might have a strong influence on the weather patterns
Develop an idea. Before you go to sleep, consciously think about a topic or a person you'd like to dream about. Raise a question that's troubling you and see how your dream responds to it.
Keep track. Next to your bed, place a pen and some paper, or a tape recorder or laptop(笔记本电脑) ,to record your dreams as soon as you wake up.
Try to wake up naturally, without the help of an alarm clock or barking dog that can interrupt your dream cycle. If your schedule doesn't allow you to sleep in during the week, begin your dream journey on a weekend or during a vacation.
Wake up slowly. For the first moment after you wake up, lie still and keep your eyes closed, because your dream may be connected to your body position while you slept. Try to recall the dream and then store it in your memory by giving it a name like "Late for an Exam" or "My Date with Ashley Judd." When you rise, immediately write down as many images, feelings and impressions as you can.
Connect the dots. To better interpret your dreams, try to make connections between your recalled dreams and recent events. Do you recognize people from the present or past? Can you detect any themes from the dream? Look for patterns over several dreams that might help explain an individual dream.
Change the outcome, If you have nightmares happening again and again that make it difficult to sleep, try to change the endings. Once you wake up from a bad dream, imagine a change in the action to create a more positive outcome. If you are trapped, try to fly. In your dream, you can do what you want !
The passage advices you to "wake up slowly"______.
A.because dreaming usually happens not long before you wake up
B.because sleeping posture may be related to your dream
C.so as not to connect your dreams
D.so as not to have a nightmare
According to a report by the American Heart Association, doctors should consider prescribing【5】aspirin for middle-aged people with a family history of, or【6】for, heart disease. (Risk factors include smoking, being more than 20 percent overweight, high blood pressure and lack of exercise. )
Aspirin is also a lifesaver during heart attacks. Paramedics now give it routinely, and experts urge anyone with chest pain,【7】if it spreads to the neck, shoulder or an arm, or is accompanied by sweating, nausea (恶心), lightheadedness and breathing difficulty to chew and【8】an aspirin tablet immediately.
When taking aspirin for heart attack,【9】the plain, uncoated variety. For even faster absorption, crush and mix with a little water. Speed of absorption is critical because most heart attack deaths occur【10】the first few hours after chest pain strikes.

The biggest obstacle to healthier economic performance, though, is political. As the Fed's chairman, Alan Greenspan, acknowledged in the closing months of 2002, uncertainty about the future is holding both investors and consumers back. The shadowy threat of international terrorism and the much more explicit prospect of a war with Iraq have made many Americans nervous about the future. For businesses still reeling from the speed at which the late-1990s boom turned to slump, the political climate is one more reason to put off investing in new plant and equipment or hiring new staff. For consumers, for so long the mainstay of the American economy, the thrill of the shopping mall seems, finally, to be on the wane.
It is hard to put a favorable interpretation on most of the data. But it is important to keep a sense of perspective. Some recent figures look disappointing partly because they fall short of over-optimistic forecasts -- a persistent weakness of those paid to predict the economic future, no matter how often they are proved wrong. The Fed will be watching carefully for further signs of weakness during the rest of the month. Mr. Greenspan is an avid, even obsessive, consumer of economic data. He has made it clear that the Fed stands ready to reduce interest rates again if it judges it necessary--even after 12 cuts in the past two years. At its last meeting, though, when it kept rates on hold, the Fed signaled that it did not expect to need to reduce rates any further.
Monetary policy still offers the best short-term policy response to weak economic activity, and with inflation low the Fed still has scope for further relaxation. President Bush's much-vaunted fiscal stimulus is unlikely to provide appropriate help, and certainly not in a timely way.
Which of the following best describes the America's economic situation?
A.It is recovering.
B.It faces an uncertain future.
C.It remains depressing.
D.It shows unreliable signs.
