Job letters and resumes must attract the attention of busy readers, who may spend only 6
0 seconds deciding whether to consider you further. This article gives you the tools to write a successful letter and resume. "Successful," of course, means a letter and resume that will get you an interview. After that, your interpersonal skills will help you land the job. The letter and resume only aim to get you to the next step--the personal interview. Most job letters and resumes still get sent through the mail. However, a growing number of applicants (申请人) use the Internet to apply for jobs. For example, on-line services can place resumes into a bank used by hundreds, perhaps thousands, of companies. The resumes will be scanned with the use of software, which searches for key words that reflect abilities needed for specific jobs and then sends selected resumes to companies. Whether you use on-line techniques like e-mail and resume services or stick with the traditional approach(方式) the same basic writing prisiples apply. Your letter, no longer than one page, should be specific about the job you seek and your main selling points. The resume--one page or two at most--should simply, specifically ,and neatly highlight(强调) your background. 根据以上内容,回答下列各题。 A successful letter and resume will help you __________ .

A. gain tools

B. get an interview

C. make decision

D. become attractive

When Louis Braille was three years old, he became blind in both eyes as the result of
an accident in his father's harness shop. His father, determined that Louis should not suffer the usual fate of blind persons at that time and become a beggar, kept him in the village school until he was ten and then entered him in the institution des Jeunes Aveugles in Paris.Louis learned to read from the three books engraved in large raised letters in the Institution library. He did exceptionally well both in academic work and at the piano and the organ, and was soon helping to teach the younger children.

In 1819, the same year that Louis entered the Institution, Charles Barbier, an army captain, reported to the Academy of Sciences on a system of raised dots and dashes which enabled soldiers to read messages in the dark.Later, Barbier brought his invention to the Institution. After experimenting with it, young Braille produced a writing system using only dots, from which he gradually devised 63 separate combinations representing the letters in the French alphabet. At the request of an Englishman, he later added the letter “w”, accents and punctuation marks, and mathematical signs.Although government bureaucracy prevented immediate official adoption, his system was used at the Institution as long as the director, Dr.Pignier, was in office.Pignier’s successor insisted on returning to the officially approved former system, but students continued to use Braille's method secretly.Eventually, its superiority was established and it was adopted throughout France.

Task 1

Directions: After reading the following passage, you will find 5 questions or unfinished statements, numbered 36to 40. For each question or statement there are 4 choices marked A), B), C)and D).

You should make the correct choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. The challenge of writing a powerful cove letter(附信) can lead job candidates to search endlessly for advice, but be careful. While you likely will find some valuable advice, you may come across a few tips that could mislead you.

“You need a lengthy cover letter. ” This probably is one of the “bad cover letter tips. ” Think about it :hiring managers have piles of resumes and cover letters to review. If yours is longer than the rest, it might not get read at all. Aim to get all of your points across in three brief paragraphs: a clear introduction that lets employer know which job you are applying for and why you are interested in the position; a paragraph that includes a few specific examples of how to have excelled(擅长) in past roles that are relevant to the open position; and a concluding paragraph that tells employers how you will benefit their company and requests a future meeting.

“Your cover letter is less important than your resume. ” Some hiring managers shove(随手扔) cover letters to the side, but most do not. Because you never know what type of hiring manager you are dealing with, it is best to submit a nice cover letter. While some employers place less emphasis on cover letters, others decide who to interview based on them. Remember that the point of a cover letter is to tell employers something that makes them want to meet you.

From one point of view, language is behaviour;it is part of the way we act.And like every other kind of behaviour,it must be adjusted to fit different contexts or situations where it is use

For instance, among people who are used to a writing system, there is one adjustment everyone makes:they speak one way and write another way.Speakers can stop in the middle of a conversation and repeat themselves if they sense that they are being misunderstood;writers often go back over their writing to see that it is clear, which is,however, before the communication occur.Once writers have passed their writing to someone else, they cannot change it. Speakers can use intonation(语调),stress(重音),and pauses to help make their meaning clear.A simple sentence like “John kept my pencil” may mean,by a shift in the stress and intonation patterns, either John rather than someone else kept the pencil,or John kept rather than just borrowed the pencil,or it was a pencil rather than anything else that he kept.Writers,on the other hand, have their special tools of various punctuation(标点) marks, capitals, italic(斜体) letters, and so on.Skillful writers could also change the word order of a sentence. So“Cindy only had five dollars” could be turned into “Cindy had only five dollars” to mean Cindy had no more than five dollars,or into “Only Cindy had five dollars” to mean nobody but Cindy had five dollars.

Did Sarah Josepha Hale write “Mary’s Little Lamb,” the eternal nursery rhyme(儿歌)about

Did Sarah Josepha Hale write “Mary’s Little Lamb,” the eternal nursery rhyme(儿歌)about girl named Mary with a stubborn lamb? This is still disputed, but it’s clear that the woman 26 reputed for writing it was one of America’s most fascinating 27 characters. In honor of the poem publication on May 24,1830, here’s more about the 28 supposed author’s life.Hale wasn’t just a writer, she was also a 29 fierce social advocate, and she was particularly 30 obsessed with an ideal New England, which she associated with abundant Thanksgivinx xg meals that she claimed had “a deep moral influence,” she began a nationwide 31 campaign to have a national holiday declared that would bring families together while celebrating the 32 traditional festivals. In 1863, after 17 years of advocacy including letters to five presidents, Hale got it. President Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War, issued a 33 proclamation setting aside the last Thursday in November for the holiday. The true authorship of “Mary’s Little Lamb” is disputed. According to New England Historical Society, Hale wrote only one part of the poem, but claimed authorship. Regardless of the author, it seems that the poem was 34 inspired by a real event. When young Mary Sawyer was followed to school by a lamb in 1816, it caused some problems. A bystander named John Roulstone wrote a poem about the event, then, at some point, Hale herself seems to have helped write it. However, if a 1916 piece by her great-niece is to be trusted, Hale claimed for the 35 rest of her life that “Some other people pretended that someone else wrote the poem”.
