Over the weekend, we spent hours and hours, staying up late into the night, talking about the people she was hanging around with. She started telling me stories about her new boy friend, about how he experimented with drugs and was into other self-destructive behavior. I was blown away! She told me how she had been lying to her parents about where she was going and even stealing out to see this guy because they didn't want her around him. No matter how hard I tried to tell her that she deserved better, she didn't believe me. Her self-respect seemed to have disappeared.
I tried to convince her that she was ruining her future and heading for big trouble. I felt like I was getting nowhere. I just couldn't believe that she really thought it was acceptable to hang with a bunch of losers, especially her boy friend.
By the time she left, I was really worried about her and exhausted by the experience. It had been so frustrating that I had come close to telling her several times during the weekend that maybe we had just grown too far apart to continue our friendship, but I didn't.I put the power of friendship to the ultimate test. We'd been friends for far too long. I had to hope that she valued me enough to know that I was trying to save her from hurting herself. I wanted to believe that our friendship could conquer anything.
A few days later, she called to say that she had thought long and hard about our conversation, and then she told me that she had broken up with her boy friend. I just listened on the other end of the phone with tears of joy running down my face. It was one of the truly rewarding moments in my life. Never had I been so proud of a friend.

"The Internet is growing quickly, and we still have a lot of work to do to cover the planet", Cerf told the first day of the annual conference of the Internet Society in Geneva where more than 1,500 cyberspace fans have gathered to seek answers to questions about the tangled web of the Internet
Cerf believed that it would soon be possible to send real-time science data on the Internet from a space mission orbiting another planet such as Mars. "There is now an effort under way to design and build an interplanetary Internet. The space research community is coming closer and closer and merging. We think that we will see interplanetary Internet networks that look very much like the ones we use today. We will need interplanetary gateways and there will be protocols to transmit data between these gateways", Cerf said.
Francois Fluekiger, a scientist attending the conference from the European Particle Physics Laboratory near Geneva, was not entirely convinced, saying. "We need dreams like this. But I don't know any Martian whom I'd like to communicate with through the Internet".
Cerf has been working with NASA's Pasadena Jet Propulsion Laboratory—the people behind the recent Mars expedition—to design what he calls an "interplanetary Internet protocol" He believes that astronauts will want to use the Internet, although special problems remain with interference and delay.
"This is quite real. The effort is becoming extraordinarily concrete over the next few months because the next Mars mission is in planning stages now", Cerf told the conference.
"If we use domain names like Earth or Mars jet propulsion laboratory people would be coming together with people from the Internet community. ' He added.
"The idea is to take the interplanetary Internet design and make it a part of the infrastructure of the Mars mission".
He later told a news conference that designing this system now would prepare mankind of future technological advances.
"The whole ides is to create an architecture so the design works anywhere. I don't know where we're going to have to put it but my guess is that we'll be going out there some time", Cerf said.
"If you think 100 years from now, it is entirely possible that what will be purely research 50 years from now will become commercialized".
According to Cerf, the purpose to design interplanetary Internet is to
A.send real-time science data.
B.communicate with astronauts.
C.lay foundation for future technological advances.
D.commercialize it

So far few details have been reported, but it is feared that at least twenty people lost their lives, among them the pilot, who was killed instantly. The local ambulances and firemen were on the scene within minutes of the crash, but additional help had to be rushed from other areas.
Mr. Lesilie Collins, one of the survivors, told our reporter, "We passengers noticed the engines were making a funny noise. Of course we couldn't see anything because of the fog, but the pilot said there was nothing to worry about. The next thing we know, the engines went dead. There was a rushing noise--and after that I don’t remember any more."
Mr. Collins is now in hospital, being treated for minor injuries. We will be bringing you further news of the crash as we receive it. In the meantime relatives are asked to ring 02-3457211 for information.

This important change in women' s life has only recently begun to have its full effect on women's economic position. Even a few years ago most girls left school and took a full-time job. However, when they married, they usually left work at once and never returned to it. Today the school-leaving age is sixteen, many girls stay at school after that age, and though women marry younger, more married women stay at work at least until shortly before their first child is born. Very many more afterwards return to full or part-time work. Such changes have led to a new relationship in marriage, with the husband accepting a greater share of the duties and satisfactions of family life.
We are told that in a family about 1900 ______.
A.few children died before they were five
B.seven or eight children lived to be more than five
C.the youngest child would be fifteen

2 But college has never been able to work its magic for everyone. And now that close to half our high school graduates are attending, those who don't fit the pattern are becoming more numerous, and more obvious. College graduates are selling shoes and driving taxis; college students interfere with each other's experiments and write false letters of recommendation in intense competition for admission to graduate school. Others find no stimulation in their studies, and drop out—often encouraged by college administrators.
3 Some observers say the fault is with the young people themselves—they are spoiled and they are expecting too much. But that's a condemnation of the students as a whole, and doesn't explain all campus unhappiness. Others blame the state of the world, and they are partly right. We've been told that young people have to go to college because our economy can't absorb an army of untrained eighteen-year-olds. But disappointed graduates are learning that it can no longer absorb an army of trained twenty-two-year-olds, either.
4 Some adventuresome educators and watchers have openly begun to suggest that college may not be the best, the proper, the only place for every young person after the completion of high school. We may have been looking at all those surveys and statistics upside down, it seems, and through the rosy glow of our remembered college experiences. Perhaps college doesn't make people intelligent, ambitious, happy, liberal, or quick to learn things—maybe it's just the other way around, and intelligent, ambitious, happy, liberal, quick-learning people are merely ones who have Been attracted to college in the first place. And perhaps all those successful college graduates would have been successful whether they had gone to college or not. This is heresy to those of us who have been brought up to believe that if a little schooling is good, more has to be much better. But contrary evidence is beginning to mount up.
By "fit the pattern" (in Para. 2) the author means that ______.
A.college graduates earn more money
B.college graduates are morally sounder
C.college graduates are more liberal
D.all of the above
