Most of us grow up taking certain things for granted. We tend to assume that experts and r
eligious leaders tell us" the truth". We tend to believe that things advertised on television or in newspapers can't be bad for us.

However, encouragement of critical thinking in students is one of the goals of most colleges and universities. Few professors require students to share the professors' own beliefs. In general, professors are more concerned that students learn to question and critically examine the arguments of others, including some of their own beliefs or values. This does not mean that professors insist that you change your beliefs, either. It does mean , however, that professors will usually ask you to support the views you express in class or in your writing.

If your premises (前提) are shaky, or if your arguments are not logical, professors personally point out the false reasoning in your arguments. Most professors want you to learn to recognize the premises of your arguments, to examine whether you really accept these premises, and to understand whether or not you draw logical conclusions. Put it this way. Professors don't tell you what to think; they try to teach you how to think.

On the other hand, if you intend to disagree with your professors in class, you should be prepared to offer a strong argument in support of your ideas. Arguing just for the sake of arguing usually does not promote a critical examination of ideas. Many professors interpret it as rudeness.

In the first paragraph, the writer tries to tell us that people______.

A.easily accept certain things without a second thought

B.grow up through learning certain things in life

C.are forming their views during their growth

D.have strong beliefs in authorities while getting old

Nowadays, a standard for measuring power has changed. These changes foretell a new standar
d for measuring power. No longer will a nation's political influence be based solely on the strength of its military forces. Of course, military effectiveness will remain a primary measure of power. But political influence is also closely tied to industrial competitiveness. It's often said that without its military the Soviet Union would really be a third-world nation. The new standard of power and influence that is evolving now places more emphasis on the ability of a country to compete effectively in the economic markets of the world.

America must recognize this new course of events. Our success in shaping world events over the past 40 years has been the direct result of our ability to adapt technology and to take advantage of the capabilities of our people for the purpose of maintaining peace. Our industrial prowess(威力)over most of this period was unchallenged. It is ironic(有讽刺性的) that it is just this prowess that has enabled other countries to prosper and in turn to threaten our industrial leadership.

The competitiveness of America's industrial base is an issue bigger than the department of defense and is going to require the efforts of the major institutional forces in our society, government, industry, and education. That is not to say that the defense department will not be a strong force in the process. But we simply cannot be, nor should we be, looked upon by others as the savior(救星) of American industry.

Now a nation's political influence depends on______.

A.the strength of its military forces

B.its ability to compete in industry

C.economic markets

D.both A and B

应用文理解:请根据文章内容从每道题中的四个选项中选出最佳答案。

Vitamins are important to our health. Different vitamins are found in different foods -grains, vegetables and fruits, fish and meat, eggs and milk products. So which foods should be eaten to get enough of the vitamins our bodies need? Let us look at some important vitamins for the answer.

Vitamin A helps prevent skin and other tissues from becoming dry. People who do not get enough Vitamin A cannot see well in darkness. They may develop a condition that dries the eyes. This can result in infections and lead to blindness. Vitamin A is found in fish liver oil. It is also in the yellow part of eggs. Sweet potatoes, carrots and other darkly colored fruits and vegetables contain substances that the body can change into Vitamin A.

Vitamin BI is also called thiamine (硫胶). Thiamine changes starchy foods into energy. It also helps the heart and nervous system work smoothly. Without it, we would be weak and would not grow. We also might develop beriberi (脚气病). Thiamine is found not just in whole grains like brown rice, but also in other foods. These include beans and peas, nuts, and meat and fish.

Vitamin C is needed for strong bones and teeth, and for healthy blood passages. It also helps wounds heal quickly. The body stores little Vitamin C. So we must get it every day in foods such as citrus fruits, tomatoes and uncooked cabbage.

Vitamin D increases levels of the element calcium (钙) in the blood. Calcium is needed for nerve and muscle cells to work normally. It is also needed to build strong bones. Vitamin D prevents the children's bone disease rickets (佝偻病). Ultraviolet light from the sun changes a substance in the skin into vitamin D Fish liver oil also contains vitamin D. In some countries, milk producers add vitamin D to milk so children will get enough.

Vitamin K is needed for healthy blood. It thickens the blood around a cut. to stop bleeding. Bacteria in the intestines (肠道) normally produce vitamin K. It can also be found in pork products, liver and in vegetables like cabbage, kale and spinach.

Lack of Vitamin A will lead to______.

A.night blindness

B.heart disease

C.beriberi

D.rickets

"The first and best of victories is for a man to conquer himself; to be conquered by himse
lf is, of all things, the most shameful," says Plato. Self-control is at the root of all the advantages. Let a man give in to his impulses and feelings, and from that moment he gives up his moral freedom.

A single angry word has lost many a friend. When Socrates found in himself any temper or anger, he would check it by speaking low in order to control himself. If you are conscious of being angry, keep your mouth shut so that you can hold back rising anger. Many a person has dropped dead in great anger. Fits of anger bring fits of disease. "Whom the gods would destroy they first make mad. ""Keep cool", says Webster, "anger is not argument. ""Be calm in arguing", says George Herbert," for fierceness makes error a fault."

To be angry with a weak man is to proye that you are not strong yourself. "Anger", says Pythagoras," begins with folly and ends with regret. "You must measure the strength of a man by the power of the feelings he conquers, not by the power of those which conquer him.

Self-control is man's last and greatest victory.

If a man lacks self-control he seems to lack everything. Without it he can have no patience, no power to govern himself; he can have no self-confldence, for he will always be controlled by his strongest feeling. If he lacks self-control, the very backbone and nerve of character are lacking also.

What does the reader learn from the first paragraph?

A.The greatest victory for a man is to conquer everything except himself.

B.One's moral freedom is based on the control of himself.

C.To control oneself is the most difficult in one's life.

D.ff a person holds his own feelings, he will feel most shameful.
