听力原文: When you see a clever advertisement in a newspaper, do you say to yourself, "Ah, that's good. I'd like to have one of those"? Or do you say, "What lies are they telling this time? It can't be very good or they wouldn't have to advertise it so cleverly"? Both of these people exist; the first are optimists; the second, pessimists and realists.

Advertisements can be extremely useful if they are honest; if, let us say, you have broken your pen and you want to buy another, the first thing to do is to look at as many advertisements for pens as you can find. That will help you to choose the model, color and price that suit you. Advertisements save a lot of time and trouble by putting sellers in touch with buyers in a quick and simple way. If the advertisements are true and accurate, the customers will be satisfied and will probably buy from the same firm next time and advise their friends and acquaintances to do the same.

The really dishonest advertiser hopes to sell his goods quickly and to make a large profit on them before the customer's reactions begin. He knows that no customers will buy from him a second time, and that none will recommend his products to their friends. But there are also semi-dishonest advertisers. They make claims for their products which they know perfectly well to be incapable of verification, like advertising that a certain toothpaste contains a particular substance—which it in fact does—knowing that this substance is in fact neither beneficial nor harmful to the teeth. Such advertisements do not tell downright lies, but their advertising is deliberately misleading.

(30)

A.Trust all advertisements and make purchases accordingly.

B.Get suitable colors and prices from advertisements.

C.Doubt the truthfulness of advertisements.

D.Admire the clever ways advertisements are made.

A market is commonly thought of as a place where commodities are bought and sold. Thus fru
it and vegetables are sold wholesale at Covent Garden Market and meat is sold wholesale at Smithfield Market. But there are markets for things 【21】______ commodities, in the usual sense. There are 【22】______ estate markets, foreign exchange markets, labor markets, short-term capital markets, and so on; there may be a market for anything which has a price. And there may be no particular place 【23】______ dealings are confined. Buyers and sellers may be 【24】______ over the whole world and instead of actually meeting together in a market-place they may deal with one another 【25】______ telephone, telegram, cable or letter. 【26】______ dealings are 【27】______ to a particular place, the dealers may consist wholly or in part of agents 【28】______ instructions from clients far away. Thus agents buy meat at Smithfield 【29】______ retail butchers all over England; and 【30】______ on the London Stock Exchange buy and sell 【31】______ on instructions from clients all over the world. We must therefore define a market 【32】______ any area over which buyers and sellers are 【33】______ such close touch with one another, either directly or 【34】______ dealers, that the prices 【35】______ in one part of the market affect the prices paid in other parts.

Modem means of communication are so rapid that a buyer can discover 【36】______ asking, and can accept it if he wishes, 【37】______ he may be thousands of miles away. Thus the market for anything is 【38】______ . the whole world. But in fact things have, normally, only a local or national market.

This may be because nearly the whole demand is concentrated 【39】______ one locality. These special local demands, 【40】______ , are of quite minor importance. The main reason why many things do not have a world market is that they are costly or difficult to transport.

A: Very well, we have settled everything about this transaction, except the terms of payment.

B: As you know, we prefer the L/C 20 days in advance which expires 15 days after receiving the paking list.

A: I suppose you have known our financial standing and credit well now after our long-term cooperation. We know an irrevocable L/C can ensure that the seller gets payment duly. But, on the other hand, it would increase the buying cost. Therefore, could you consider giving us D/P this time?

B: I am sorry. But our rules only allow us to accept other terms of payment by L/C, although the buyer has had two or three transactions with us before.

A: But why not if you have known the buyer's credit after several deals?

B: We hope you can understand. We have got some serious lessons from the credulity. One of them was through D/P documentary collection. When the shipment worth US $50000 was effected, the buyer refused to make the payment. But we can do nothing with it.And that buyer had had one or two deals before this one.

A: I see.But the flexible terms of payment will definitely bring you more orders as well as facilitate the buyers' purchasing.

B: Sure.We don't mean we won't accept other terms of payment forever. As a matter of fact, we will do so when we have known well about the buyer's credit after a real long-term cooperation.
