On the fourth Thursday in November, Americans celebrate the feast of Thanksgiving. This fe
ast is a time when the family comes together for a meal and gives thanks to God for the blessings they have received. The first thanksgiving feast was celebrated by the early American settlers who started the feast to give thanks to God for their good harvest.

In America Thanksgiving is the family holiday. It is on that holiday that all the family members make a special effort to gather together. The feast is always held on Thursdays and most people have a four-day holiday from school and work. Thus they are able to travel a great distance to be with their family.

The Thanksgiving meal is traditionally turkey which is a large bird valued as food for the first time. The table is filled with fruits, walnuts and many types of vegetables. For the sweet dish the main choice is usually pumpkin pie. The meal is a time for the members of the family to talk to each other. There will be talking before the meal, during the meal and long after the meal.

On Thanksgiving morning there are in many cities sporting events and parades to mark the day. The family dinner is usually held in the afternoon around 4 p.m. The mother will prepare the meal and the father will carve the turkey. He will be seated at the head of the ta- ble. The meal will begin with a short prayer of Thanksgiving to God for the blessings the family received. The father will also thank the family for coming together on this day. Dur- ing the meal there is plenty of food for everyone present. The meal is a very joyful time. When the meal is finished, some will help with the dished and others will return to the living room to talk or watch television.

In many ways the feast of Thanksgiving is similar to the Chinese feast of Mid-Autumn Festival. It is the time for the family to gather together to give thanks and to share in meal.

Thanksgiving is said to be the family holiday in America because______.

A.each family has its own way of celebrating traditional holidays

B.people will try to get back to be with their family wherever they are

C.people celebrate this holiday only at home and abroad

D.it is a holiday for those who have a family

After watching my mother deal with our family of five, I can't understand why her answer t
o the question, "What do you do?" is always, "Oh, I'm just a housewife." JUST a housewife? Anyone who spends most of her time in meal preparation and cleanup, washing and drying clothes, keeping the house clean, leading a scout troop, playing taxi driver to us kids when it's time for school, music lessons or the dentist, doing volunteer work for her favorite charity, and making sure that all our family needs are met is not JUST a housewife. She's the real Wonder Woman.

Why is it that so many mothers like mine think of themselves as second-class or something similar? Where has this notion come from? Have we males made them feel this way? Has our society made "going to work" outside the home seem more important than what a housewife must face each day?

I would be very curious to see what would happen if a housewife went on strike. Dishes would pile up. Food in the house would run out. No meals would appear on the table. There would be no clean clothes when needed. High boots would be required just to make it through the house scattered with garbage. Walking and bus riding would increase. Those scout troops would have to break up. Charities would suffer.

I doubt if the man of the house would be able to take over. Oh, he might start out with the attitude that he can do just as good a job, but how long would that last? Not long, once he had to come home each night after work to more household duties. There would be no more coming home to a prepared meal; he'd have to fix it himself. The kids would all be screaming for something to eat, clean clothes and more bus fare money. Once he quieted the kids, he'd have to clean the house, go shopping, make sure that kids got a bath, and fix lunches for the next day. Once the kids were down for the night, he might be able to crawl into an unmade bed and try to read the morning newspaper. No, I don't think many males are going to volunteer for the job. I know I don't want it. So, thanks, mom! I'll do what I can to create a national holiday for housewives. It could be appropriately called Wonder Woman Day.

By what means do the children of the author's family go to school?

A.They take school bus.

B.They take a taxi.

C.Their mother drives for them.

D.Scout troop sends them to school.

Every year just after Christmas the January Sales start. All the shops reduce their prices
and for two weeks, they are full of people looking for bargains. My husband and I do not normally go to the sales as we don't like crowds and in any case are short of money as we have to buy lots of Christmas presents.

Last year, however, I took my husband with me to the sales at the large shop in the center of London, We both needed some new clothes and were hoping to find a television set. When we got to Oxford Street, it was so crowded that we decided to split up and meet again at the underground station, so I left my husband and started looking around the shops. Unfortunately all the clothes were in very large sizes and so were not suitable for me. But I did buy a television at a very cheap price, so I felt quite pleased with myself.

When I arrived at the station, my husband was not there. So I sat down in a nearby cafe to have a cup of tea. I quickly finished my tea when I saw my husband and went out to meet him. He looked very happy. Then I saw he was carrying a large and heavy cardboard box. "Oh, dear! "I thought. Yes, we had no new clothes but two televisions. We shall not be going to the sales again.

In January ______.

A.lots of people go shopping for discount

B.people have a lot of money to spend after Christmas

C.all the shops close for a two-week Christmas holiday

D.people don't have enough money to go looking for bargains

All that we really need to plot out the future of our universe are a few good measurements
. This does not mean that we can sit down today and outline the future course of the universe with anything like certainty. There are still too many things we do not know about the way the universe is put together. But we do know exactly what information we need to fill in our knowledge, and we have a pretty good idea of how to go about getting it.

Perhaps the best way to think of our present situation is to imagine a train coming into a switchyard. All of the switches are set before the train arrives, so that its path is completely determined. Some switches we can see, others we can not. There is no ambiguity if we can see the setting of a switch: we can say with confidence that some possible futures will not materialize and others will. At the unseen switches, however, there is no such certainty. We know the train will take one of the tracks leading out, but we have no idea which one. The unseen switches are the true decision points in the future, and what happens when we arrive at them determines the entire subsequent course of events.

When we think about the future of the universe, we can see our "track" many billions of years into the future, but after that there are decision points to be dealt with and possible fates to consider. The goal of science is to reduce the ambiguity at the decision points and find the true road that will be followed.

According to the passage, it is difficult to be certain about the distant future of the universe because we ______.

A.have too many conflicting theories

B.do not have enough funding to continue our research

C.are not sure how the universe is put together

D.have focused on investigations of the moon and planets

Over the past few decades, there has been a considerable increase in the use of mathematic
al analysis, both for solving everyday problems and for theoretical developments of many disciplines. For example, economics, biology, geography and medicine have all seen a considerable increase in the use of quantitative techniques. Twenty years ago applied mathematics meant the application of mathematics to problems in mechanics and little else—now, applied mathematics, or as many people prefer to call it, applicable mathematics, could refer to the use of mathematics in many varied areas. The one unifying theme that these applications have is that of mathematical modeling, by which we mean the construction of a mathematical model to describe the situation under study. This process of changing a real life problem into a mathematical one is not at all easy, we hasten to add, although one of the overall aims of this book is to improve your ability as a mathematical modeler.

There have been many books written during the past decade on the topic of mathematical modeling; all these books have been devoted to explaining and developing mathematical models, but very little space has been given to how to construct mathematical models, that is, how to take a real problem and convert it into a mathematical one. Although we appreciate that we might not yet have the best methods for teaching how to tackle real problems, we do at least regard this mastery of model formulation as a crucial step, and much of this book is devoted to attempting to make you more proficient in this process.

Our basic concept is that applied mathematicians become better modelers through more and more experience of tackling real problems. So in order to get the most out of this book, we stress that you must make a positive effort to tackle the many problems posed before looking at the solutions we have given. To help you to gain confidence in the art of modeling we have divided the book into four distinct sections.

In the first section we describe three different examples of how mathematical analysis has been used to solve practical problems. These are all true accounts of how mathematical analysis has helped to provide solutions. We are not expecting you to do much at this stage, except to read through the case studies carefully, paying particular attention to the way in which the problems have been tackled—the process of translating the problem into a mathematical one.

The second section consists of a series of real problems, together with possible solutions and related problems. Each problem has a clear statement, and we very much encourage you to try to solve these problems in the first place without looking at the solutions we have given. The problems require for solution different levels of mathematics, and you might find you have not yet covered some of the mathematical topics required. In general we have tried to order them, so that the level of mathematics required in the solutions increase as you move through the problems. Remember that we are only giving our solutions and, particularly if you don't look at our solution, you might well have a completely different approach which might provide a better solution.

Here, in the third section, we try to give you some advice as to how to approach the tackling of real problem solving, and we give some general concepts involved in mathematical modeling. It must, though, again be stressed that we are all convinced that experience is the all-important ingredient needed for confidence in model formulation. If you have just read Sections I and 11 without making at least attempts at your own solutions to some of the problems set, you will not have gained any real experience in tackling real problems, and this section will not really be of much help. On the other hand, if you have taken the problem solving seriously in Section Ⅱ, you might find the general advice give

A.solving problems in real life with mathematics

B.the application of mathematics in problems related to mechanics

C.its ability to describe various situations

D.the construction of mathematical modeling
