When I was a kid, I never knew what my parents—or anyone else's—did for a living. Instead, the most common wish (among 34%) was that parents would be less stressed and tired by work.
Allison Levin is the mother of three young children and a professional in the growing field of "work/life quality". Levin counsels employees who are overwhelmed by their work and family obligations to carefully review their commitments-not only at the office but at home and in the community too—and start paring them down. In recent years, a growing body of literature has emerged on parent influence in youth sport based on these and other theories. Few people would defend the Victorian attitude to children, but if you were a parent in those days, at least you knew where you stood: children were to be seen and not heard. Freud and his company did away with all that and parents have been bewildered ever since.
