The most important thing you can do for a family member or friend who is depressed is to h
elp him or her get an appropriate diagnosis and treatment. This may involve encouraging him or her to stay with treatment until symptoms begin to abate. On occasion, it may require making an appointment and accompanying your loved one to the doctor. It may also mean monitoring whether he is taking medication. Encourage your friend to obey the doctor's orders about the use of alcoholic products while on medication. The second most important thing is to offer emotional support. This involves understanding, patience, affection, and encouragement. Do not despise feelings expressed, but point out realities and offer hope. Do not ignore remarks about suicide. Report them to your friend's therapist. Invite your friend for walks, outings, to the movies, and other activities. Be gently insistent if your invitation is refused. Encourage participation in some activities that once gave the person pleasure, such as hobbies, sports, religious or cultural activities, but do not push him to undertake too much too soon. Do not accuse your friend of faking illness or of laziness, or expect him "to snap out of it". Eventually, with treatment, most people do get better. Keep that in mind, and keep reassuring him that, with time and help, he will feel better.

If you're unsure where to go for help, check the Yellow Pages under "mental health", "health", "social services", "suicide prevention". You can also click the Web sites listed on the right. People and places that will make referrals to, or provide, diagnostic and treatment services include: family doctors, community mental health centers, university -- or medical school -- affiliated programs, and local medical or psychiatric societies. In times of crisis, the emergency room doctor at a hospital may be able to provide temporary help for an emotional problem, and will be able to tell you where and how to get further help.

Which of the following can be the best title of this passage?

A.How to Help a Depressed Lover.

B.Where You Can Get Help to Help a Depressed Lover.

C.The Most Important Things You Can Do to Help a Mental Illness Patient.

D.Financial and Emotional Support for Depressed Lover.

Passage One

Are you a good reader? Good readers know that reading isn't just about knowing words— it's a way of thinking. Here are some tips that may be of some help.

Think before you read. Before you read the text, ask yourself the questions that why you are reading it and what you want to get from it. These will help you choose what words you need to know and what words you can skip or scan.

Think while you are reading. Can you get the meaning of the text without looking up new words in a dictionary? A text will often give examples that may help you understand some words. For example: Many large Russian cities, such as Chelyabinsk and Irkutsk, have taken steps to protect their culture. The words "Chelyabinsk' and "Irkutsk' may be new to us, but the sentences before and after it tell us what they are.

Think after you read. What is the main idea of the text? Is the text too easy or too hard for you?

If you practice reading and thinking in this way, you will become a better reader and you will learn better and faster.

Many visitors finds the fast pace at which American people move very troubling. One's first impression is likely to be that everyone is in a rush. City people always appear to be hurrying to get where they are going and are very impatient if they are delayed even for a short moment.

At first, this may seem unfriendly to you. People will push past you as they walk along the street. You will miss smiles, brief conversations with people as you shop or dine away from home. Do not think that because Americans are in such a hurry they are unfriendly. Often, life is much slower outside the big cities, as is true in other countries as well.

Americans who live in cities often think that everyone is equally in a hurry to get things done; just as city people do in Tokyo, Singapore or Paris, for example. But When they discover that you are a stranger, most Americans become quite kindly and will take great care to help you. If you need help and say, "I am a stranger here. Can you help me?' Most people will stop, smile at you, and help you find you way or answer your questions. Occasionally, you may find someone too busy or perhaps too rushed to give you help. If this happens, do not be discouraged (气馁); just ask someone else. Most Americans enjoy helping a stranger.

Many people who first visit the United States will find that().

A.America is a highly developed country

B.Americans are impatient and unfriendly people

C.the fast pace in American life often causes much trouble

D.American city people seem to be always in a rush

Should struggling students be banned from clubs and sports?Getting a bad grade in Rockingh

Should struggling students be banned from clubs and sports?

Getting a bad grade in Rockingham, Vt. could get you kicked off the team! School officials there are considering new guidelines that would prevent students with bad grades from participating in extracurricular activities, such as sports and clubs. The proposal would affect students in eighth grade and below.

School board member Mike says the policy would motivate students to work harder in school. He drafted a letter to coaches, parents, and after-school program leaders to encourage them to allow only kids who are meeting certain academic standards into their program.

Not everyone gives such policy an A+. Some people argue that no student should be excluded from after-school activities. They say taking part in extracurricular activities can help kids do better in class by improving their participation and concentration skills. They say a 2009 study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that time spent in extracurricular physical activities does not take away from students' ability to do well in the classroom . In fact, it may even help boost girls' academic performance.

Students themselves have different opinions.

SCHOOL COMES FIRST

Why not require good grades to participate in those activities?

Kids need to understand that grades are important. School comes first, period. Getting good

grades help you with life, help you go to college, get a job, and so on. Banning underachieving students from extracurricular activities not only gives them motivation to get their grades up, but allows more time to study or get help from a tutor.

DON' T BAN STUDENTS

Every student should be able to participate in extracurricular activities, no matter what his or her grades are. Extracurricular activities can help kids concentrate more on doing homework. They can help kids develop mentally and physically.

A school policy that tells kids with bad grades that they can't be in sports or the school play is like judging a book by its cover. Every student is unique. A kid may have a learning disability, an attention issue, or a difficult time studying in his or her home environment. His or her teachers should find why the student is struggling. Together they should find out a solution that will keep the student in the activity.

Which of the following is the closest in meaning to the underlined word "excluded"?

A.protected

B.approved

C.blamed

D.banned

Trees should only be pruned (修剪) when there is a good reason for doing so. Many gardeners believe that more damage results from doing it unnecessarily than from leaving the tree to grow in its own way.

First, pruning may be done to make sure that trees have a desired shape. The object may be to get a tree of the right height, and to help the growth of small side branches which will thicken its appearance or give it a special shape. Secondly, pruning may be done to make the tree healthier. You may cut out diseased or dead wood, or branches that are rubbing against each other and thus causing wounds. A tree may grow healthier by removing the branches that are locking up the centre and so preventing the free movement of air.

One result of pruning is that an open wound is left on the tree and this provides an easy entry (进入) for diseases, but it is a wound that will heal. Often there is a race between the healing and the disease as to whether the tree will live or die. Pruning is usually clone in winter, for then you can see the shape of the tree clearly without the interference from the leaves.

According to the article, which of the following statement is NOT true?

A.Pruning is necessary when there are unwanted branches.

B.Damage is done to a tree if it is left to grow in its own way.

C.Diseased or dead branches should be cut away if they are found to rub against each other.

D.Growing side branches often prevent air from moving freely.

On a clear night you can see many stars in the sky. These stars are millions of miles away
. Are there living things on any of the stars? People have always thought about this question. They could not find the answer before now. Today scientists know more about space than ever before. Some machines can help them look for the answer.

How will scientists do this? People can' t go to the stars. The stars are far away. A person would take hundreds of years to the next star in a spaceship. So scientists are sending out radio signals. These signals travel in space at the speed of light. At that speed, radio signals will take 25 years to reach the next star. The signals ask "Is there anyone out here?". Living things in space must have machines to hear the signals. We will not get an answer to our signals for more than 50 years. However, scientists are already listening. Someone from space may be trying to send signals to us, too.

Scientists also have sent large telescopes into space. A telescope can make things look larger. The telescopes are going around the earth. They are looking for life on other worlds. In the next few years we may get an answer to the question, "Is there life in space.

People always thought about the question, ______.

A.How can scientists use machines to look for a star?
